Wow. Just wow.

Sunday night at the Billboard Music Awards, Britney Spears and Rihanna re-created “The Kiss” (Madonna, Britney, Christina Aguilera) — and a lot more.

Welcomed onstage by Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, Britney was lovely in black… mocking the old Playboy Bunny look with the old Hefner-ears, and then proceeding to trample their male slaves with true pinache.

There’s much more to come. For one thing, the performance of dominatrix Rihanna was truly riveting — worthy of Dolores Gray as she effectively trampled multiple male dancers into oblivion.

For another, there’s Nicky Minaj, who (not to our surprise) seems to have fired most of her male handlers in recent weeks, and completed the Kiss II trilogy on Sunday… two ebony femdoms receiving the torch passed to Britney by Madonna.

Thus, with one photo shoot, Diaz becomes the first woman to leap into the Celebrity Dominatrix Top 20 without a public manifestation of dominance over a male since Hillary Clinton. (Teri Hatcher and Kelly Ripa made larger leaps in the index, but only after a public worship session with a submissive male).

Here’s our analysis:

Behind the lines: Art. A picture paints a thousand words, but a few words may help define what’s in the pixels. In the case of the recent shoot for Harper’s Bazaar, we’d say the imagery, especially considering the nice NY skyline graphic work, is deliberately femdom. Add to it the interview content, and the cover copy from the HB web site editors — “Woman on Top” (see below) — and it’s clear the symbolism was self-conscious.

Behind the lines: Life. Cameron Diaz’s life and career before this shoot suggest a little bit more vulnerability than fem-dom. We like the flirtations with younger males, suggesting an appropriate treatment of them as boytoys, but would have preferred to see them dismissed more summarily.

Furthermore, while we thought her kiss with Christina Applegate was solid, it was unspectacular. And we don’t quite understand the need to caveat this or any personal activity as either lesbian or non-. (“Sex with a woman doesn’t make you a lesbian,” Playboy, July 2010. True, but unnecessary.)

Given that demonstrating, and celebrating, the in-essentiality of the male is an element of the New Femocratic Order, a couple of style points get taken off here.

On the other side of the ledger, however, is (see the Harper’s Bazaar interview) her obvious pitch for a role as Lola in the forthcoming Damn Yankees — reuniting Cameron with Jim Carrey, and using her long-ago-proven dancing skills. There’s a lot to be said for it, and a lot to be said for the dominant instincts of any woman who wants to play Lola: A little brains, a little talent. All of which is enough to vault Ms. Diaz into the top 20, a large move for a single photoshoot.

And it’s pretty close to the single digits. For Cameron, we think, there only needs to be one more “confirmation sighting” to put her into the Celebrity Dominatrix Top 10…. how about Derek Jeter in a public heel lick or foot rub?

Go for it, darling — “woman on top,” indeed.
