What is a femme fatale? What is her essence?

Is it the cruelty, the pain and destruction she meets out? Or is the ultimate femme fatale marked more by her indifference?

The femme fatale is different things to different people, and our blog here is an effort to reconsider and redefine these questions….

In the meantime, we’re solicting your thoughts, which you’re welcome to post below, though we encourage you to take our survey on the femme fatale thread at Femdom City. (So far, such terms as heartless, destructive, acquisitive, seductive, deadly, ambitious, narcissistic, feminist, and competitive all draw significant support.)

There’s also an intelligent discussion of these matters on the Ruth Agua blog on her Angelina Jolie femme fatale project.

Our Spanish is rusty; we are open to assistance. But it seems to be a work in progress which, to our eye, captures the essence of the femme fatale in this sense: There is no single “femme fatale,” there are femmes fatale…

“She” is a composite, like “woman” herself. Of course, Ruth Agua couldn’t have selected a better incarnation of these mysteries in our era than Jolie…

Hence we salute her work, support it, and look forward to its progress and its completion:

1. Jennifer Lopez. Her destruction of Marc Anthony began more than a year ago, but the last few weeks have been especially enjoyable for those who enjoy a good public humiliation. J-Lo’s ride on top of this male ponyboy continues, and probably isn’t over yet.

Meanwhile, she’s moving on, with reporters, professionals, and other performers groveling before the Jennifer Lopez wax figure from Vegas to D.C. to New York. When males worship you, you are a powerful woman; when they worship your statute, you are a Goddess.

2. Angelina Jolie dominatrix. Angelina’s disciplining of Brad Pitt for becoming a boring slave through pot-smoking would normally have put her at #1. Only a strong crack of the whip by J-Lo has resigned Jolie, for now, to the still-coveted second spot.

3. Helen Mirren. The 66-year-old tops J-Lo in the annual LA Fitness Best Body poll… reminiscent of Mirren’s victory over 2010 Celebrity Dominatrix of the Year Megan Fox. It’s all the more charming that Mirren protests that Lopez “is 1,000 times hotter than me,” though we politely disagree.

4. Jane Fonda. Dispensing advice on senior living, including sex (the source of femdom power), in her aptly titled new book Prime Time. It used to be that women over 40 years old needed a special category to dominate the male mind. Now they’re on top as well (see Helen Mirren, above.)

5. Michele Bachmann. “Queen of rage,” raves Newsweek, and after victory in a U.S. straw poll in Iowa, a major player in power politics. Naturally we didn’t care for those 2006 “submissive” comments raised prominently in a recent Republican Party debate. But as long as she’s dominating Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, she’s femdom enough for Celebrity Dominatrix.

6. Melissa Febos. Her book Whip Smart captures the public eye and at once explains and demonstrates the growing rise of womanity — witness, e.g., her recent ABC interview, here.

7. Claudia Schiffer. Apparently feeling left out as the fashion world surges onto the Age of Femdom, Claudia graces the cover of German Vogue with a combination Catwoman and Mistress T. (See image nearby, with Claudia’s Vogue cover on top, Cindy Crawford — # 11 on our countdown — somewhat tired Bazaar image underneath.)

8. Cameron Diaz. Slipping a little as she plays nursemaid to the fast-fading Alex Rodriguez, but A-Rod is so lame, you almost have to hold him up to punch him.

9. Anne Hathaway. It only takes one publicity photo of her as Catwoman to vault Anne Hathaway into the Celebrity Dominatrix Top 10. Catwoman is that powerful, Anne Hathaway is that powerful, and the soft leather suit, criticized by some, looks good to us.

10. Cindy Crawford dominatrix. The Bazaar cover nearby seems a little less than riveting, but it’s a hopeful step in the right direction.

And the next ten:

11. Lady Gaga. How many of those Twitter followers are male submissives? Hard to say, but we’d like to see a poll.
12. Katie Holmes dominatrix. Still in the Top 20 on the strength of an uber-sexy Vogue España shoot. We liked her as Lola to Tom Cruise’s submissive Joe Hardy in their charity benefit recreation of “Whatever Lola wants” from Damn Yankees. But she needs to take a page from some of the celebrity femdoms above and assert her rule over Tommyboy more affirmatively and publicly.
13. Rihanna. Quietly establishing herself as a regular presence in the Femdom Power Rankings, with occasional trips to the #1 spot.
14. Britney Spears. A relatively quiet August so far as the Femme Fatale tour continues. But we expect big things from Britney at the MVT Video Music Awards (August 28), as you can see from our post previewing the VMAs, and looking over their femdom history, here.
15. Nicki Minaj. Fingers crossed that she’ll be part of what could be an epic performance at the VMAs this month. Minaj is widely credited with “raising the bar” for the whole Britney Spears tour, and rightly so.
16. Taylor Momsen dominatrix. Celebrates her birthday fortnight by pulling a Delilah, shaving the head of one of her crew members. What will she cut off next?
17. Kate Beckinsale. Total Recall is shooting and set for 2012 summer release. But you can expect some publicity-minded photo leaks from the set at any time.
18. Katy Perry dominatrix. Another celebrity femdom to keep your eye on come August 28 (the VMAs).
19. Kate Moss dominatrix. Quiet much of this year, but we liked her Gatsbyesque wedding shoot in the summer of Midnight in Paris.
20. Megan Fox. Back to work, Megan. Vagina Power likes to be used. Don’t worry: It’s like riding a bicycle.

It’s total turmoil this week for Femdom Power. Maybe those hot summer breezes and flash storms have finally started to steam things up.

But whatever the cause, June’s month-end rankings feature four first-time entrants to the top 20; the highest-ranked first-time entrant ever in #3 Maya Fox, the new owner of Clips4Sale.com; and a thunderstorm of change which has seen Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian, Lexi Sindel, Megan Fox, and other recent #1 femdoms plummet like a 2009 bank stock — in some cases out, of the power rankings altogether.

And of course, topping them all is new (and first time) #1 Celebrity Dominatrix Jennifer Aniston, seen nearby from the cover of Marie Claire. (Subscribe to Marie Claire, here.)

She out-hotted Brooklyn Decker in Just Go With It, out-slugged it in the action thriller Bounty Hunter, and is now out-femdoming the world both in the cinema (Horrible Bosses) and real life (finally settling down to a nice home-wrecking relationship like long-time quasi-rival Angelina Jolie.)

There’s a strong challenge from such brats as the aforementioned Fox and Nicki Minaj, and an ever-looming presence in female executioner Taylor Momsen… the Anakin Skywalker of girlydoms, who won’t even turn 18 until July 26 (careful, boys, it might not be legal to die for her in some states.)

But for now, the MILFs rule, with a fascinating 1-2 battle looming between Jen and Angelina as the hurricanes prowl, the cougars roar, and the summer gets hot, hot, hot.

1. Jennifer Anniston. Recently acquired a first tattoo — on her right foot — in honor of her dog. No word on whether her left foot will soon sport a little tribute to her other dog, the boytoy she lured out of a 14-year relationship, Justin Theroux…. but naturally we like the new femdom Jen. Don’t get mad at Angelina Jolie — destroy a few males.

2. Angelina Jolie. The cuckolding and enslavement of Brad Pitt continues. You read about it in the Star and In Touch this month; you read about it at Celebrity Dominatrix over the last couple of years.

3. Nicki Minaj. Reportedly in a growing squabble over her opening act for Britney Spears’s Femme Fatale tour… Nicki keeps going over the time budget, infuriating Britney. As much as we love BritBrit, from what we’ve seen of the tour so far, it definitely needs more Minaj, not less. Hopefully she brought some of her dungeon equipment along, otherwise this could be a long, boring road trip.

4. Cameron Diaz. Cameron’s casual flirtations with such co-stars as ex-BF Justin Timberlake (see photo, right) are driving Alex Rodriguez to fits of jealousy and inadequacy.

Any minute now, we expect an email from Damn Yankees director Todd Graff casting for Cameron Diaz as Lola. Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets.

5. Ginger Lee. Falling off a bit, now that the roasting of Weiner is winding down. What do you call one male congressman ruined by a porn star? A good start.

6. Nicole Sherzinger. Faith Hill (Sunday night NFL lead-in) is now the star of the second sexiest video sendoff in sports… and it’s a distant second, to Nicole’s recent and riveting introduction to the NBA playoffs.

If Major League Baseball had half a brain or more, it would be signing Scherzinger up for a 7-figure deal to cut a music video intro for the U.S. national passtime…. but it doesn’t. Nicole Scherzinger could sex up a golf tournament.

10. Rihanna. Where can a woman vault to #1 from # 20 in two weeks — and then tumble to #10 two weeks later? Only, so far as we know, in the Femdom Celebrity Power Rankings.

17. Sarah Palin. Doing almost nothing to raise her standing… but she’s not in the race yet, which, compared to her fellow Republicans, makes her look positively resurgent.
18. Ceara Lynch. Becoming the Sweeney Todd of femdoms, and such a lovely one. Another day, another castration for one of her slaves in the Lynch Mob.
19. Rebecca Northan. Still going strong with her hilarious but sexy performance in Kung Fu Panties.
20. Morgan Fairchild. Another quiet couple of weeks; but hey, it’s still Morgan Fairchild.
