Is Rihanna a submissive because Chris Brown whacked her once, or a strong dominant woman whose dominatrix-izations are more than a stage act?

Well, according to her recent Rolling Stone cover interview, she’s both — a submissive, and a femdom. In a word, a “switch,” though one, according to Rihanna, who “likes” being in charge, but “loves” having it be her lover.

Does this mean she’s “really” not a femdom? You could say that, but we wouldn’t.

As anyone who’s studied the matter carefully knows, a woman’s sexuality tends to be more nuanced. Surveys, for example, show that men are either “straight” or “gay,” pretty much, with few true bi-curious metrosexuals. Women, on the other hand, seem to move along a spectrum rather than an allgay-allstraight dichotomy.

Likewise, taking her at her own word, Rihanna has both submissive and dominant tendencies — more submissive, but including both.

There’s more to say about the nature of switchery… to us, there’s a special power in being able to enjoy different roles, and navigate between them at well. But score a point both for us and our critics as we conclude, we all have a point.

Celebrity Dominatrix update list

We’ve said for nearly two years that Rihanna’s assault by Chris Brown (February 2009) was the proximate spur to her evolution from a dressup-only femdom to a true dominatrix Rihanna.

The incident with Brown, she says, “actually gave me a lot of liberation. What I mean is, I was able to tap into the personal part of my music. I started to tell stories through my music that were actually my stories.”

Her first album after the incident, the gritty Rated R, she notes approvingly, “was darker, edgier, more aggressive. I can’t come out singing happy songs if I’m not happy,” Rihanna explains. “Even the look of it, the styling, what I wore.

Then, she adds:

“I quickly found peace in myself: who I am and what I want to do in life. I couldn’t hold on to all that pain and anger, because I knew that wasn’t me at all.”

Which begs the question: Who is Rihanna now?

You might just want to take a look at the lead video for her latest album, replete with male journalist and handler types in ball gags, submissively trailing Rihanna on a global tour de force.

That album’s title? S & M.

So, is it just a stage act, or is she really femdom?

Well, consider:

Rihanna reportedly has taken private videos of her femdom encounters with both males and females; will play an actual dominatrix this year on film; and has entitled the lead single of her soon-to-be platinum album “S & M.”

It’s enough, we hope, to convince many skeptics (and even our good friends at one of the world’s best femdom update portals, Cruel Girls) that pop-inatrix Rihanna is not only a fetish-style artist, but a practicing femdom emerging with great power over the culture…

… a young woman who will lead millions of males to higher consciousness of their natural role as slaves in the years to come.
