Video Milquetoast Awards:
Lamest VMAs ever?
Did we miss something, or was MTV’s 2011 Video Music Award show really, really, really weak?
— Beyonce wore a used-baggy-like gown and a clumsy pant suit for a tame performance of her woman-on-top song. Ahwright, she’s pregnant, but we expected more.
— Lady Gaga was mainly confusing dressed as a woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman pretending to be a man, or whatever she was, at the show’s opening — which she closed by tumbling off a piano.
Gaga also engaged in an uninspired lesbian kiss with Britney Spears… but in this case, third time — see our previous posts on The Kiss (Britney and Madonna) and The Kiss II (Britney and Rihanna) — wasn’t the charm. Just tiresome.
— Normally one could expect something new from Nicki Minaj to rescue the evening, as she has during some stops on the Femme Fatale Tour… but she looked like a confused Alice in Wonderland in drag, and performed that way as well.
— Katy Perry seemed like a Stepford wife trying to balance a Cheezehead on her head, carrying away more than one well-deserved award with little of the style and femdom flair we’ve come to expect.
Perhaps our expectations were just too high. Selena Gomez looked hot on the red carpet, and Britney Spears wore a smart black cocktail dress that showed off her legs, nicely conditioned after a summer on tour.
At the end of the night, the real highlight was probably the too-brief review of Britney’s previous triumphs at the VMAs, from Toxic to Cold-hearted Snake to the Madonna-Britney-Christina Kiss.
As that suggests, there wasn’t much this August to get excited about, or even interested in.
